Pamela Conrad took the helm as Chair and lead author of the groundbreaking American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Climate Action Plan, marking a pivotal moment in the organization’s history. This visionary plan, deeply rooted in the three core goals and six key initiatives of the IFLA Climate Action Commitment, charts a bold path forward for ASLA’s climate-related endeavors until 2025.
With a comprehensive framework comprising 21 objectives and 71 actionable items, the ASLA plan sets a course for transformative change, with scheduled reviews and updates every five years until 2040. Complementing this plan is the Climate Action Field Guide, equipping ASLA members and organizations with invaluable resources and toolkits to advance climate action within their spheres of influence.
Looking ahead to 2040, ASLA envisions landscape architecture projects that not only achieve zero emissions and bolster carbon sequestration but also deliver tangible economic benefits, address climate injustices, restore ecosystems, and promote biodiversity. Anchored in four overarching goals – Practice, Equity, Advocacy, and Cultural Empowerment – and driven by six strategic initiatives, the ASLA Climate Action Plan aims to catalyze a global movement towards sustainable, resilient, and equitable landscapes. Under Pamela’s guidance, ASLA is poised to lead the charge in shaping a more sustainable and just future for all.
