In 2009, Pamela faced the loss of her mentor, Patrick Curran, a pivotal figure at SWA Los Angeles, who encouraged her passion for environmental sustainability. Determined to honor his legacy, Pamela co-founded the Patrick T Curran Initiative (PTCI) alongside professional colleagues and Patrick’s family, embarking on their inaugural project, the Dominguez Enhancement & Engagement Project (THE DEEP).
The choice of the Dominguez Creek project was deliberate, aligning with goals of community outreach, sustainable education, and local collaboration. With a focus on affordability, eco-consciousness, and minimal environmental impact, the project aimed for maximum positive change.
Teaming up with Los Angeles non-profit From Lot to Spot, the Initiative engaged in several design charrettes at the Environmental Charter High School in Hawthorne, California. Through fundraising efforts yielding $9,000 in cash and donations, the project came to fruition in 2012 with a memorable planting day. Supported by 75 volunteers, the initiative installed 500 native plants, planted 20 trees, unveiled educational signage, painted a vibrant mural, and savored delicious taco-truck tacos, leaving an enduring mark on the community.
