Amidst the escalating global climate and biodiversity challenges, the Sustainable Landscape Implementation Plan (SLIP) provides a strategic reevaluation of the Penn State University exterior environment. This recalibration aims to align university expectations and operations more effectively with the pressing demands of sustainability, all while safeguarding and enriching the cherished elements of the campus landscape.
The project successfully addressed operational emissions in alignment with the University’s Carbon Emissions Reduction Task Force (CERTF) goals. Through rigorous carbon accounting measures, substantial reductions in emissions were achieved, contributing significantly to the university’s sustainability objectives. The SLIP supports increasing biodiversity on campus by promoting native ecosystems to enhance the natural environment.
Central to the success of the project was collaborative efforts with an interdisciplinary team involving faculty, steering committee, and maintenance department and especially students, catalyzed by the EcoAction student committee and supported by a dedicated fund. This student-led initiative played a pivotal role in driving meaningful change within the university community.
The first phase of the project moving forward will be the successful implementation of a pilot initiative to transition away from traditional lawns. By replacing conventional landscaping practices with more sustainable alternatives, we set the stage for ongoing ecological transformations across campus.
